Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Goal: The main goal of RV Heincke cruise 456 was, like cruise He455 the full-area mapping of the seafloor by sidescan sonar. Simultaneously, other hydroacoustic devices like multi-beam echosounder, sub-bottom profiler and single-beam echosounder with an integrated seafloor classification system were operated for system comparisons. The cruise was directly related to the BSH-R&D project ?development of a standarized method for area-wide acquisition of sediment distribution in the EEZ of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea". The working area was selected from the sediment distribution shown by Figge (1981). The acoustic profiles cover the Elbe-glacial valley in the southwest and reach to the Sylt/Helgoland outer reef area with heterogenous sediments in the northeast. The survey was carried out between 09.02.2016 and 22.02.2016. A total of 56 acoustic lines with a line spacing of 250m were surveyed. The length of the lines varied between about 15nm and 35 nm (total length > 1200 nm). The sidescan sonar covered an area of about 560 km?. For ground truthing of the acoustic backscatter mosaic 44 surface samples were retrieved by Shipek-grab. Because of the unexpected good weather conditions the whole planned research program could be carried out
