Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The focus of R/V Sonne voyage SO251 - EAGER-Japan ?Extreme events Archived in the GElogical Record of Japan's Subduction margins" was to investigate fluid- and sediment mobilization processes by mud volcanism, earthquake-triggered seafloor displacement, submarine landslide and related "paleoseismologic event deposits" and to compare inferred earthquake processes and rates along accretionary vs. erosive subduction margins of Japan (Nankai Trough and Japan Trench, respectively). The second part of SO251 (Leg 2) started on Oct 18 from Yokohama to the Kumano Basin off SW Japan. During the short voyage, which ended on Nov 02 back in Yokohama, we mapped wide portions of the Kumano Basin and adjacent topographic steps, e.g. the topographic high in the South where the Megaspaly fault is actively accreting sediment. We now have a complete high-resolution bathymetric map of the study area and many hundreds of kilometers of subbottom Parasound profiles. We also dove 7 times with ROV PHOCA to recover seafloor instruments and survey active mud volcanoes. The work was complemented by gravity and piston coring in strategic locations and heat flow surveys to identify hydrogeologically active zones
