Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Submarine landslides are important geologic hazards. Although they are in the focus of research since decades, there is still a clear lack in knowledge with respect to the interplay between sediment physics, gas hydrate dissociation, and tectonic movement as potential trigger mechanisms. During the SO247, submarine landslide masses were drilled with the MeBo200 at two different morphotectonic settings along the Hikurangi convergent margin (offshore the east coast of the northern island of New Zealand): (I) Rock Garden and (II) the Tuaheni slide complex. Tvelve MeBo cores with a total length of approx. 470 m were recovered from slid masses, undisturbed section and different locations along active frontal ridge segments. With a 105 m long continous sediment core, the first long sediment core from the Hikurangi margins was recovered during this cruise. Analysis of the core material as well as sampled pore fluids and gases will enable a deeper insight into the slid mobility, the potential trigger mechanisms and timing af failure events. Furthermore, these data enable to test a variety of hypotheses how gas hydrates and gas hydrate dissociation control sediment physics and therewith the mechanics of submarine landslides. These drilling operation was paired with 53 gravity cores and dense heat-flow measurements. The latter to characterized the thermal regime and thus hydrate stability; information which are essential to test a number of hypothesis regarding influence of gas hydrate dissociation as potential trigger mechanisms of slides.
