Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The expedition MSM046 CECAS (Response of (C)oastal (E)cosystems to biogeochemical and hydrographic changes in eastern (CA)nadian (S)eas during Holocene and Anthropocene)was supposed to increase both the understanding of coastal ecosystems and of the forcing for long term changes within these systems. Studies on recent processes covered biogeochemical and microbiological processes and an assessment of zoobenthos in the St. Lawrence estuary, seasonal changes in vertical particle flux at the center of the oxygen minimum in the St.Lawrence, bio-optical measurements along the Eastern Canadian coast and the assessment of organic anthropogenic pollutants. The historical development of ecosystem changes over the holocene will be assessed in cores between 0.5 and 15 m, that were obtained in sites along the Canadian east-coast between Nova Scotia and the Hudson Bay. The cruise started in Halifax with an intense study of the St-Lawrence system. After a port call in St. Anthony a Canadian mooring ( Seacycler) was deployed in the central Labrador Sea. Then, several east-coast fjords including Lake Melville were mapped by means of different echo-sounding devices and cores were taken at the appropriate sites. The same sampling pattern was performed in the central Hudson strait and in the entrance area of the Hudson Bay. After five weeks the cruise ended in St.John's, New Foundland. The research cruise went completely according to plans, a lot of valuable samples was obtained on all serviced stations.
