Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
First part of the cruise was addressed to monitor the recent North Sea water inflow into the Baltic Sea, which occurred in the late December 2014. This included studies of the spatial variation of hydrographic and hydrochemical parameters especially in the Arkona and Bornholm Basins. Secondly, currents near the ground, bioturbation as well as fluxes of nutrients, trace gases and main - as well as trace metals within the sediment-water interface were investigated to quantify structural and biogeochemical properties in an interdisciplinary manner (Project SECOS). Therefore, key-sites (typelocalities for sand and mud) of the German Baltic Sea (within the 12 sm zone as well as in the EEZ) were selected and sampled. Furthermore, a series of resuspension and incubation experiments were performed on board to simulate different conditions of currents and oxic conditions impacting the sediment. Macrozoobenthic studies as well as acoustic mapping were conducted to complete the characterisation. The cruise was performed mostly under windy and cold winter weather. Due to stormy conditions we had to stop all scientific work and had to stay in the harbour of Sa?nitz (Germany) from 15th to 16th of January. However, we had to exchange one member of the scientific crew (Naumann/Kurth) thus this stopover did not affect our work and most of the planned research activities were realised.
