Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The target of SO244-2 is to measure crustal deformation in cm-scale using the GeoSEA array (Geodetic Earthquake Observatory on the SEAfloor). The GeoSEA array will record deformation at the Iquique Segment of the Nazca-South America plate boundary. The array includes a self-steering autonomous surface vehicle (Wave Glider) which will receive acoustic information from the seafloor sensors and transmit them via satellite link to shore. A total of 23 autonomous geodetic seafloor transponders were deployed in three sub-arrays on the lower and middle slope of the continental margin as well as on the outer rise. The telemetry transponders record pressure, tilt, temperature, sound velocity and communicate with neighboring stations via acoustic signals. They will autonomously log these data for app. 3.5 years. The transponders are installed on 4 m high steel tripods which are veered to the seafloor using the ship's deep sea cable.
