Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The objective of this cruise was to investigate the regional pattern of seawater circulation within basaltic seafloor underneath the sediment cover. Basement outcrops in-between impermeable pelagic sediments permit seawater recharge and discharge. Recharge of oxic seawater causes upward oxygen diffusion into the sediments overlying the permeable basalt in areas proximal to the recharge sites (seamounts). The prolonged oxygen exposure time is suggested to have a strong impact on biogeochemical processes in the sediments and the element inventory of Mn nodules. During the cruise investigations were carried out in four different working areas representing different morphological settings. In every working area we started with single-channel seismic and bathymetric surveys to get information about the seafloor morphology, the presence of tectonic structures, and sediment thickness. These surveys were followed by heat flow measurements to investigate fluid circulation. The positions of sediment sampling were chosen according to the heat flow results. Sediment sampling included piston or gravity cores (up to 15 m), multiple cores (MUC) and box cores. This way we could sample the near-bottom water, the sediment surface, and sediments close to the basaltic basement. Ex-situ analyses of dissolved oxygen in the pore water were done on-board after a 12 hours temperature calibration of the cores as well as sampling of pore water for trace metal analysis. The sediments were described, photographed and sub-sampled. The same was done with Manganese nodules from box cores. First chemical analyses of sediment and nodule samples with a mobile XRF were carried out.
