Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
The aim of the cruise was to investigate the benthic biodiversity in the manganese nodule fields in the Clarion Clipperton Zone. In this area the International Seabed Authority has granted concessions to several countries for the exploration of marine mineral. We want to understand the potential impacts of deep-sea mining to benthic communities and also the recolonization potential after mining. In order to investigate the connectivity of benthic populations we sampled the fauna of all size classes (prokaryotes, meiofauna, macrofauna and megafauna) along a longitudinal gradient using multicorer, box-corer and epibenthic sledge, in addition to ROV dives. Geochemistry in the water column and in the sediments was studied with a CTD-Rosette, Multicorer and Gravity-corer. Megafauna distribution was also studied using photographic transects done with an AUV. We sampled in the German License Area, the IOM Site, the Belgian the French and in a reserve zone APEI Nr 3. In order to investigate the potential recovery after mining we sampled with the ROV inside old dredge track produced by chain dredges or Epibenthic sledges in the area. The age of the tracks range from 2 days to 36 years.
