Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Cruise Objectives: The main goal of RV Heincke cruise 455 was the full-area mapping of the seafloor by sidescan sonar. Simultaneously, other hydroacoustic devices like multi-beam echosounder, sub-bottom profiler and single-beam echosounder with an integrated seafloor classification system were opoerated for system comparisons. The cruise was directly related to the BSH-R&D project ?development of a standarized method for area-wide acquisition of sediment distribution in the EEZ of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea". Brief narrative: The survey was carried out between 24.11.2015 at 22:09 and 08.12.2015 at 23:00. 21 acoustic lines with a line spacing of 250m were surveyed. The length of each line was about 35 nm (total length about 735 nm. The sidescan sonar covered an area of about 370 km?. For ground truthing of the acoustic backscatter mosaic 42 surface samples were retrieved by Shipek-grab. Because of two major storm periods (wind 12 Bft, waves >5m) during the time-window of He455 only about half of the planned work could be carried out
