Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Cruise HE438 has been combined with HE439 (19.02.-09.03.2015, working area: Dogger Bank, chief scientist Dr. H.C. Hass, AWI – Sylt) to increase the flexibility and thus the optimal use of ship time. The task of this cruise leg was to gain sediment cores in the area of the paleo Elbe valley. Core data together with a high resolution sediment echo sounder data set (8 kHz, Innomar SES-2000), collected during the cruises HE400 (May 2013), HE415 (February 2014) and HE436 (November 2014), shall be used to reconstruct in detail the development of the paleo Elbe valley and its historical process of sedimentary infill with successive Holocene sea level rise. The vibro core positions were chosen in a way that the internal reflectors visible in the sediment echo sounder data can be sampled completely down to the valley basis. Due to adverse sea conditions it was not possible to collect sediment cores during this leg. Instead, additional sediment echo sound data (350 nm) were collected in the area of the paleo Elbe valley (fig.1, AG EUT). Afterwards, 350 nm were recorded with the on-board sediment echo sounder and multibeam as well as a seafloor classification system (RoxAnn) in the working area of the second leg (fig. 1, AG Dogger-S, cf. cruise report HE439) to reconstruct the Holocene paleoenvironment. The sediment cores planned for this leg (4 cores each 4.5 – 6 m long) and additional echo sound data in the region of the paleo Elbe valley (540 nm) were collected during the leg of HE439 (cf. cruise report HE439).
