Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The cruise was conducted as a training course for students at the IHF in the context of the biology bachelor studies called "Methods of Fisheries Science" at Hamburg University. On the cruise the students were trained on frequently used fisheries science and biological oceanography methods. The cruise was designed according to the standards of scientific cruises and coupled to ongoing research activities in Western Baltic of the institute. The cruise was conducted to study the spawning activities of different fish species, mainly cod and sprat in the Kiel Bight. The last detailed informations about the spawning grounds of cod and sprat in this area are about 50 years old. Due to eutrophication and climate change a shift in the plancton situation was observed in the last decades. But little is known about the effects on the spawning events and the on-growth conditions of the ichthyoplankton. The cruise was designed to get informations about the fish distribution with a new multifrequency echosounder. On the same time CTD, Multi- and Bongo net sampling was performed to investigate the spatial distribution of zoo- and ichthyoplankton and its hydrographic environment. Another focus were investigations about temporal dynamic of zooplankton abundances caused by preying of planktivorous fishes.
