Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The first purpose of this cruise was the maintenance and installation of underwater measurement system at the research platform FINO3. Specifically a C-POD system was recovered and a new one deployed, and an underwater acoustic recording system was installed. Both systems are located southwest of FINO3, within its 500m safety zone. The installation required the use of divers. All maintenance and installation tasks were performed successfully. The second purpose was the execution of underwater sound propagation experiments. Sound sources (an electric transducer an a Mini-AirGun) were deployed from the research vessel at different distances drom FINO3. The transmitted signals were recorded by the acoustic recording system at FINO3. Preliminary results indicate that the recording was successful. Analysis is ongoing and will not be complete before 2015.Similar propagation experiments were carried out north of the offshore windfarm Amrumbank West. Here, the same sound soureces were used but the autonomous recording devices were operated by a third-party. The data will not be accessible before the devices will have been recovered (presumably at the end of 2014). At the end of the sea trial, the self noise of RV Elisabeth Mann Borgese was measured at the acoustic range of WTD 71 in Eckernforde Bay, Baltic Sea for three different engine states (specified in terms of PRM of the propeller shaft). Analysis is ongoing.
