Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

With a group of 9 scientists and 3 technicians/engineers from the institute of Baltic Sea Research Warnemunde (IOW) and the universities of Gdansk, Helsinki, and Aarhus (Technical University Denmark, Charlottenlund) the coastal nitrogen turnover and processes were studied in the Bay of Gdansk where the Vistula River, the largest single nitrogen source, drains into the Baltic Sea. The area had been selected as one of the "learning sites" within the BONUS project COCOA where coastal nutrient turnover will be studied at various coastal sites with major or minor riverine nutrient input (see also webpage http://cocoa.au.dk/). The station work started at VE 015 where we deployed a mooring at 50 m depth for app. 45 hours from July 5th 2014 to July 7th equipped with an ADCP and turbidity. Moreover a chamber lander with an oxygen sensor and the possibility to collect up to 12 45ml water samples was deployed for 24 hours. CTD casts and cores were taken to collect samples for particulate and dissolved substances, nutrients, oxygen and denitrification rate measurements in the sediments. Benthic animals were collected with a Van Veen grab sample, and zooplankton was taken with a 100?m mesh net to measure bulk amino acid composition. The general program remained the same for all 17 station with CTD, net tows, sediment work. Due to a carefully prepared sediment map from our polish colleagues we could sample sediments of various grain sizes from muddy sediments, fine sands to gravel. After working app. one week along the coastline and in the Puk Bay we set off towards the Gdansk deep at July 12th to July 14th.
