Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
The main target of the cruise was the monitoring of the benthic habitats in the German EEZ (part Baltic Sea) to fulfil the obligation of Germany on behalf of the habitat directive (92/43/EEC, 21. May 1992) and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). It comprises an annual investigation of the relevant habitats and focuses on the Mecklenburg Bay and the Arkona Basin using standardized sampling gears. Extends and method standards are given by the relevant directives or the corresponding manuals. The second aim was the continuation of the mapping of protected habitats in the German EEZ started in 2011. The task of the IOW working group "Ecology of benthic organisms" is the survey of the macrobenthic communities and habitat structures. The data are used as ground-truthing for the geological survey and as basis for the biological characterisation of the biotopes.
