Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

First shallow seismic screening profiles crossing the palaeo Elbe valley recorded during the cruise HE400 and shall affiliate to the seismic profiles planned for the cruise HE415 (February 2014). The screening data show the base of the palaeo Elbe valley characterized by its shallow slope at the western edge and a steeper slope at the eastern edge ending in an area with moraine deposits. Several internal reflectors indicate a sedimentary infill of the valley from the SW. To reconstruct the development of the palaeo Elbe valley and its historical process of sedimentary infill with successive Holocene sea level rise in detail, a high resolution data set of shallow seismic measurements is necessary. Additional knowledge about the modern sediment dynamics of the working area shall be gained using hydroacoustics (e.g. sidescan sonar, sediment classification systems, multibeam). The results will be instrumental in the reconstruction of past processes. The sidescan sonar data are additionally used for the research and development project ?Acoustic sea bed classification of the North Sea – Sediment dynamics in the farshore environments (AMIN)" which directly cooperates with the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH).
