Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Cruise Heincke 433 has been conducted within the frame of the ?Marin-geological practical training" (LV 63-345) of the Institute for Geology at Hamburg University. Cruise has been split to two lags (1.10.2014 to 6.10.2014 and 6.10.2014 to 12.10.2014) in order to enable more students the participation. Goal of the practical training is to introduce the students to different techniques of sediment and water sampling as well comparison of sediment types and benthic fauna that are typical for different environments. Overall, 55 stations have been sampled for suspended matter and sediments by CTD/ rosette water sampler, bottom water sampler, Van Veen grab and multicorer during both cruises. Hydroacoustic mapping has been performed each night with ship based SES 2000 and EM 710 system. Sediment and suspended matter samples will be integrated to current studies on the nitrogen cycle of the North Sea. Furthermore, communities of benthic foraminifera will be examined in order to trace changes in bottom water salinity that are related to the strength of North Atlantic Oscillation. Hydroacoustic investigations included recording of surficial and internal sediment structures as well as mapping of Pleistocene landscapes in the working area. During the first lag we examined the central and eastern German Bight. Second lag was designated for the central North Sea in the German EEZ; this has not been possible with regards to bad weather conditions (wind up to 9 Bf, swell up to 5 m). Consequently, we disposed to an alternative research program near shore the East Frisian Islands and east of Helgoland.
