Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The cruise was directly related to the research and development project "Acoustic sea bed classification of the North Sea - Sediment dynamics in the farshore environments (AMIN)" which directly cooperates with the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH). Ongoing research of the AWI Sylt in the shallow coastal region between the East Frisian island Spiekeroog and the Danish island Mand? has shown that comprehensive acoustic catalogues and standardized computer routines (e.g. for data processing, mosaicking and merging of different data sets) are necessary to understand the complex sediment distribution and dynamics. In this study, the acoustic catalogue shall be improved by adding items from the remoter and deeper areas of the North Sea. Further, possible links between the sediment distribution and shallow seismic structures (e.g. Elbe-Urstromtal) shall be identified. In doing so, processing routines have to be adapted to the 'deep' water conditions. Large scale mapping with acoustic devices (sidescan sonar, seafloor classification systems, multibeam) is necessary to document the diversity of the habitats. The anticipated results will also be interpreted regarding the early detection of large-scale hydrographic changes in the North Sea.
