Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Cruise M106 is a joint effort of the Kiel Collaborative Research Centre SFB 754 ("Climate - Biogeochemistry Interactions in the Tropical Ocean"), of the BMBF joint project RACE and of the German-French Cooperative Project AWA. Within the framework of the SFB 754, ventilation processes of the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ), including lateral and vertical mixing and oxygen advection (SP A3 and A4) as well as the role of zooplankton for oxygen consumption and biogeochemical cycles (SP B8) were investigated. At the equator, the cruise focussed on the equatorial current system, its interannual variability and its role in the zonal transport of heat, freshwater, and oxygen (BMBF RACE, SFB 754). Within the framework of RACE the aim of this cruise is to investigate the variability of the western boundary current system offshore of South America. In comparison the previous measurements from 2000 to 2004, a special focus was laid on the transport variability of the North Brazil Undercurrent (NBUC) – as part of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) – on timescales from intraseasonal to decadal. The main tasks during M106 were the recovery and redeployment of several sub-surface moorings (part of them are long-term efforts addressing up to decadal variations in the tropical Atlantic), a glider swarm experiment north, east, and south of the Cape Verde archipelago and station work with a CTD/Lowered ADCP/Underwater Vision Profiler (UVP), a microstructure probe and a zooplankton multinet. Water probes from the CTD rosette were sampled for chemical and biological measurements as well as incubations to study nitrogen fixation. In addition, underway measurements of upper ocean currents with both shipboard ADCPs, hydrographic measurements of temperature, salinity, CO2, O2, N2O, and meteorological measurements were performed.
