Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The Gulf of Cadiz, the Horseshoe abyssal plain and the Tagus abyssal plain to the south and southwest of the Iberian Peninsula are characterized by diffuse seismic and tectonic activity and the region lacks a clear plate boundary separating Africa from Eurasia/Iberia. The area hosted with the Great Lisbon earthquake of 1755 the largest European earthquake that was ever reported in historic times. The exact location of the source of the 1755 Lisbon earthquake is still unknown. However, work based on the arrival times of the 1755 tsunami suggested a source to the southwest of Cabo Sao Vincente, being located in the vicinity of the Gorringe Bank. The Gorringe Bank is believed to be caused by thrust, uplifting mantle rocks to the surface. The bank rises from ~4600 m to 50 m and is hence the largest feature in the vicinity of the plate boundary between Eurasia and Africa. To yield pattern of seismicity at Gorringe Bank we deployed a seismic work addressing two main features: (i) surveying the seismogenic potential of the area by yielding the minimum and maximum depth of seismogenic faulting and (ii) delineating seismically active faults. A small network of 15 OBS was deployed during the RV Poseidon cruise POS460 in October 2013 near Gorringe Bank, recording local earthquakes over a time period of approx. 6 month. During our cruise POS467 the network of OBS has been recovered.
