Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The 2014 expedition PS85 (ARK-XXVIII/2) of the research icebreaker Polarstern started June 6th in Bremerhaven and went into the northern Fram Strait. Activities will concentrated on various areas between Greenland and Svalbard within a corridor at approx. 79? N. The expedition ended at July 3rd in the harbor of Troms?. The scientific work was focused on investigations of long term change in this oceanic area and its possible interrelation with ongoing Climate Change. To fulfill this task a whole bunch of marine-scientific disciplines cooperated and investigated various processes to relate them to each other. Those studies ranged from the atmosphere, over the sea ice and the water column down to the deep sea floor. These investigations are a continuation of oceanographic and biologic long-term studies, which since more than a decade record processes which occur at this gateway to the Arctic. This year they were covered for the first time under the umbrella of the new HGF-financed infrastructure project FRAM. One focus of ecological sea-ice investigations were mechanisms of physiologic adaptations of ice-algae to varying light conditions within the ice. Those studies helped for assessments on the influence of sea-ice thickness on the primary production in the ice. Studies of the AWI-oceanographers had the aim to quantify variations in the water-mass and heat exchange between the northern North-Atlantic and the central Arctic, as well as in the circulation within the Fram Strait. To this, temperature, salinity, oxygen and currents were measured. Hydrographic investigations were complemented by biological water and net samples for biogeochemical and planktonic studies, to estimate the influence of Climate Change on bacteria, phyto- and zooplankton, as well as on the biogeochemistry in the water column. This included also influences on the vertical particle transport into the deep-sea. Those transport mechanisms have high relevance for all communities at the food limited deep sea floor. Thus, investigations combined studies on bacterial processes and smallest sediment inhabiting organisms with photo and video surveys of larger animals on the sediment surface.
