Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The aim of the cruise of the R/V Sonne from Kaohsiung to Townsville (SO-228) was to collect water and sediment samples besides seismic and bathymetric survey of tropical western Pacific. The collection of seismic and bathymetric data will be used to support the IODP full proposal 799 by Rosenthal et al. (subproject SIODP), while sediment and water samples will be used to reconstruct the deglacial rise in the atmospheric CO2 (subproject EISPAC) and the tropical Western Pacific hydrology (subproject WESTWIND). The cruise was divided in two legs: 1st leg from Kaohsiung to Jayapura, Indonesia, between 04.05. and 30.05., and 2nd leg from Jayapura to Townsville between 30.05. and 23.06.2013. To this end, water samples have been collected at 18 stations by a CTD-Rosette water sampler and sediment samples by a Multi-Corer and a Gravity Corer at 29 and 43 stations, respectively. Water depth at these stations varies between 340 m and 4200 m. The working areas include the eastern and southern continental slope off Mindanao (1st leg), northern slope of Papua New Guinea in the Bismarck Sea (1st and 2nd leg), the Western and Eastern Carolina Basins (2nd leg), the Solomon Sea and the Coral Sea off NE Australia (2nd leg). Seismic data were collected at three working areas in the eastern and southern continental slope off Mindanao and between Manus Island and New Guinea (1st leg). Swath bathymetry and sediment echo-sounder were running at and between all stations and during the seismic survey.
