Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The CHRIMP project aims at a closer investigation of large seafloor depressions at the southern flanks of Chatham Rise. These depressions range from typical sizes of pockmarks on the order of 100s of metres in diameter to more than 10 km in diameter. During the second leg several of these depressions have been investigated using sidescan sonar and water column imaging in order to determine whether they show signs of active or recent gas emissions. Selected depressions have subsequently been sampled using a multi-corer and a piston corer for subsequent geochemical, geotechnical and paleoceanographic studies.
