Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
The prime objective of the research in the investigation area of the 'Anaximander Mountains' south of Turkey was to decipher key processes of mud volcanoes. In contrast to many other mud volcanoes in the Mediterranean Sea, mud volcanoes of the Anaximander Mountains reveal gas hydrates in shallow marine sediments. During 8 AUV dives micro-bathymetry of four mud volcanoes have been mapped using a multi-beam system on the MARUM AUV SEAL 5.000. Athena and Thessaloniki mud volcanoes have been mapped with full coverage and from Kazan mud volcano the northern part with the eruption centre was measured. Three dives were used to extend an earlier micro-bathymetry map from Amsterdam mud volcano, so that the coverage of that mud volcano became distinctly enlarged, however, the entire Amsterdam mud volcano structure is such large, that it would need a couple of more dives to fully cover this. An addition to the AUV micro-bathymetry mapping we used the ELAC hull-mounted multibeam system to perform further mapping of the Anaximander Mountain area. 29 gravity corer stations sampled cores form the four mud volcanoes and 16 heat-flow stations measured temperature profiles of distinct mud flows. Five CTD stations have been performed in order to develop velocity models of the water column to calibrate the multi beam data.
