Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Scientific objectives: Deployment of three mini-landers in close proximity to cold-water coral bioherms (2 x Nordleksa, 1 x Sula Reef) and deployment of artificial substrata and previously weighed and labeled cold-water corals (Lophelia pertusa) next to the landers. This was done in order to correlate natural reef bioerosion and growth rates with the geo-physical and hydrodynamic characteristics (e.g. temperature, pH, conductivity, turbidity, etc.) from the three development sites after one year in-situ incubation. Another main objective was to collect living and dead specimens of Lophelia pertusa and associated organisms with the manned submersible JAGO for ongoing laboratory experiments concerning the effects of climate change (ocean acidification and ocean warming) on ecophysiological parameters of the corals (e.g. growth, routine metabolism, fitness) in the framework of the BMBF funded project BIOACID at GEOMAR in Kiel. Brief cruise narrative: 24 June 13: start in Bremerhaven, Germany. 29 June 13: embarkation of some scientific crew members in Brekstad (Trondheimsfjorden, Norway), arrival at station I (Nordleksa), JAGO handling training and first JAGO dive, some CTD casts. 30 June 13: CTD cast, two JAGO dives. 1 July 2013: at station II (Stjornfjorden/Medfjordgrunnen) rendezvous with cooperation partners from OZEANEUM (Stralsund) and embarkation of ZDF-TV-team, two JAGO dives for visual exploration and video documentation purposes. 2 July 2013: back at station I, deployment of two landers and in-situ experiments, two JAGO dives for lander replacement and video documentation. 3 July 2013: one JAGO dive for visual exploration, two CTD casts, partial crew-exchange in Brekstad at afternoon, heading to station IV overnight (station III was completely canceled). 4 July 2013: at station IV (Sula Reef Complex), deployment of one lander, two JAGO dives for coral sampling, one CTD in between. 5 July 2013: only one CTD due to bad weather conditions. 6 July 2013: back at station I, two JAGO dives for collecting samples. 7 July 2013: one JAGO dive (depl. of in-situ exp.), two CTD casts close to the lander positions. 8 July 2013: two JAGO dives. 9 July 2013: only one JAGO dive due to bad weather conditions. 10 July 2013: two JAGO dives for collecting samples. 11 July 2013: back at station IV, one JAGO dive for sampling, one CTD close to the third lander position, scientific work finished at 20.00 LT. 12 July 2013: Kristiansund, crew-exchange and CITES declaration of coral samples (Lophelia pertusa, Madrepora oculata), afterwards heading towards Kiel. 15 July 2013: arrival in Kiel in the evening. 16 July 2013: disembarkation of scientific crew, customs stuff (e.g. CITES), organism transfer to GEOMAR laboratories. 17 July 2013: cleanup, end of cruise P455.
