Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Expedition HE 388 has been carried out to collect hydroacoustic data and to take seafloor samples for ground truthing. Goal of the study related to this research cruise is to analyze recent sedimentary conditions and to reconstruct sediment- and submarine morphodynamics. Primary focus lies on the sand transport along the western coastlines of the islands Amrum, Sylt, R?m? and Mand?. On the long run the calculation of a sediment budget is planned that allows to interprete possible hydrographic changes and that also allows to asses the development of the Sylt/R?m? Bight in the near future. In the frame of a monitoring study (since 2004) up to 75 km-long transects were measured using the acoustic signal processor RoxAnn (total length of transects until 2010: > 3000 km). The measured data indicate changes in the roughness and the hardness of the seafloor. After suitable data processing the data also allow to estimate the granulometric composition of the surface sediments. Additionally, multibeam echosounder, sidescan sonar, and shallow seismic gear are used to asses bedforms and the geometry of sediment bodies.
