Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
The cruise HE 382 with FS Heincke started on June 15th 2012 leaving Bremerhaven 7:00 a.m. and followed a transect from Bremerhaven to Helgoland and from there to Cuxhaven and back. The cruise ended on June 20th 2012. The cruise was solely educational (students of the University of Applied Sciences Bremerhaven) and subdivided into two concurrent sections. The first section (Bremerhaven-Helgoland-Cuxhaven) was led by Prof. B. H. Buck and focused on marine biology and the influence of the rivers Weser and Elbe on physico-chemical pa-rameters and on invertebrate and fish biodiversity. The second section (Cuxhaven -Helgoland- Bremerhaven) was led by Prof. B. Koch and focused on marine biogeochemistry. The aim was to show the influence of the rivers on element fluxes as reflected by nutrient concentrations, primary productivity and organo-chemical parameters in dissolved organic matter (DOM). On the first day (15th June) of section 1 the ship followed a transect from Bremerhaven to Helgoland with seven stations, where various samples were taken. Water masses were char-acterized using the CTD device (Conductivity, Temperature, Depth) as well as oxygen and attenuation. The water rosette was used to sample water from at least two different depths at each station. The Van-Veen corer was deployed to sample surface sediments which were analysed for benthic organisms and sediment composition. Nansen net hauls were applied to sample pelagic plankton. The water samples which were taken on the first section of the cruise were filtered and frozen for later nutrient, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and sus-pended organic matter (SPM) analyses back in the lab of the University of Applied Sciences in Bremerhaven. On the second day, exploratory fishing was carried out in the region of the "Tiefe Rinne" near Helgoland. For this beam trawls and bottom trawls were carried out. The collected species were taxonomically determined, counted, and measured with respect to size and weight. The anatomy of the envertebrates and fish was explained and the organisms dissected. The third day the cruise track went from Helgoland to Cuxhaven which included an increasing influence of the River Elbe. On this transect, 5 stations were sampled and the same techniques as on the first day were applied. In Cuxhaven, the first student group deboarded and the second group (biogeochemistry) boarded. The second section of the cruise went back on the same track of cruise section 1. All stations were sampled with the water rosette and the CTD device. Inorganic nutrients, oxygen and solid phase extraction were carried out onboard in the chemistry lab. DOC and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) as well as SPM analyses were carried out back in the labs of the Uni-versity and the Alfred Wegener Institute, respectively. On the first day of section two (18th of June 2012), 8 stations were sampled on the way to Helgoland. On the second day, another 8 stations were sampled around the Island of Helgoland including the "Tiefe Rinne". At one station an exploratory box coring was carried out. The third day followed the transect back to Bremerhaven on which another 6 stations were sampled. The preliminary results demon-strated nicely the river influence on the lateral and vertical physico-chemistry. Nutrient re-gimes changed, for example, in accordance with SPM concentration, DOC/DON ratios and oxygen concentration.
