Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
This cruise aimed at understanding the impact of lateral intrusions and turbulent mixing on bio-geochemical and microbial processes inside the redoxcline of the central Baltic Sea. Study areas were located in the Gotland Basin (Area 1) and in the vicinity of the Landsort Deep (Area 2, see attached chart). Measurements at both sites included data from a towed (ScanFish) CTD System that allowed us to detect the signatures of intrusions during several basin-scale transects. Intrusions of cold and oxygen-rich waters were found to be ubiquitous features in the Gotland Basin, whereas in the Landsort Deep there was no evidence for their existence. Focusing on a few particularly strong intrusions (Gotland Basin) and turbidity hot-spots below the redoxcline (Landsort Deep), traditional CTD casts were used to optain water samples with high vertical resolution for the chemical and microbiological analyses. These included nutrient analysis (oxygen, nitrate, nitrite, ammonium) and microbiological activity and CARD-FISH measurements. Mixing parameters were estimated from more than 500 cats with a turbulence microstructure profiler on both fixed stations an 5-10 nm cross-slope transects. At several slope locations short-term moorings (ADCCPs, CTD-chains) were deployed in order to obtain a temporally resolved picture of the lowest ~50 m of the water column (see attached track chart).
