Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

This cruise served exclusively for the transportation of scientific material to the Tvarminne Zoological Station in Finland. On board of the ship itself no scientific studies have been performed. The scientific background of the work on the station was as follows: Uptake of anthropogenic CO2 by the surface ocean has caused a measurable increase in ocean acidity over the past two decades. This process, termed ocean acidification, is bound to aggravate as CO2 emissions continue. The magnitude of future changes in seawater chemistry can be predicted with reasonable certainty for a given CO2 emission scenario. Much less is known about the biological impacts of ocean acidification, particularly at the community to ecosystem level. As part of the SOPRAN project nine moored mesocosms enclosing 65m? each will be deployed near Tvarminne in summer and will be enriched with CO2, in steps from the current pCO2 level up to 1250 ppm CO2. The sensitivity of the enclosed plankton community will be monitored with regard to primary production and nitrogen fixation, species composition and succession, biogeochemical turnover and vertical fluxes, and concentrations of volatile organic compounds.
