Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

A harbour porpoise alerting device (PAL), recently developed by the company F3 (Prof. Boris Culik, Kiel) was tested in the field on its effectiveness. In an area with observed high density of harbor porpoises, FRV Clupea dropped anchor and four (4) buoys carrying acoustic warning (PAL) and detection (CPOD) devices were moored, together with 5 marking buoys (Fig 1). The presence and behaviour of individual harbour porpoises was observed and recorded on paper. During the observation, porpoises could be seen on most days, yet in most cases at larger distances of the buoys. However, the CPODs recorded acoustic signals, that are currently analysed. During the cruise important findings were gained that are useful for the improvement of the PAL devices, as well as for planning the next cruise of FRV Clupea planned for September 2012.
