Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
The aim of the expedition is to analyze the biodiversity of the deep-sea eukaryotic microbial life at abyssal depths of the Pacific, to investigate whether a deep-sea carbon reservoir existed during the last glacial period, and to track the signature of the different water masses in the Pacific and their modification along the transport pathways of water masses. For these purposes we deployed different gears during the cruise in order to collect the appropriate samples: Hydrological analyses were performed at 12 stations (temperature, conductivity, density) using the multi-parametric CTD which is also used to retrieve water samples my means of the Niskin-bottles for chemical measurements of rare earth elements (REE, University of Oldenburg). The top 30 cm of sediments were collected using a Multi-Corer at 9 stations. Samples were analyzed for pore water (Univ. Oldenburg), protists community in the fluffy layer was identified and cultivated in the lab (University of Cologne), and samples were stored and sent to Germany for later analyses in order to reconstruct the recent and past variations in the composition of seawater (University of Bremen). In total 19 stations were sampled. At 10 stations only a CTD-Rosette water sampler was used. At 2 stations the same set of gear was used, starting with a hydrosweep multi-beam survey followed by a CTD deployment and a Multi-Corer deployment. At the remaining 7 stations a hydrosweep multi-beam survey was followed by a Multi-Corer deployment.
