Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
a) Collecting 5 long sediment cores with the drill rig "MeBo" in the northern part of the South China Sea at two different sites in order to investigate changes in the Pearl River runoff that can be related to variations in the summer monsoon rainfall during the past glacial-interglacial cycles. b) Parasound profiling and seismic and bathymetric surveys at and around the two sites in order to find appropriate drilling spots. c) Collecting 3 gravity cores and two multi cores at the same sites in order to retrieve the latest changes in sedimentation regime and Pearl River runoff variability. CTD and Multi-net were carried out in order to investigate the modern oceanographic and microbiological dynamics in the northern South China Sea. Two sites at 20?09.03'N, 116?14.38'E, about 1000m water depth, and at 18?57.11'N, 113?42.63'E, about 950m water depth, were selected for drilling after extensive Parasound and seismic surveys. At both stations, water samples from the top 800m of water column were collected for stable oxygen and carbon analyses. Two multi-nets were deployed per site, one through the top 700m and the other through the top 100m and collected planktic foraminifera for genetic studies. At each site, a Multi-corer and a gravity corer were deployed, plus two gravity corer deployments at nearby sites for reference. At the first station, 2 long drillings of about 66 and 74 mbsf were deployed. At the second station, 3 long drillings of about 73, 80, and 80 mbsf were deployed.
