Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The main aim of this cruise was the assessment of the North Sea sole (Solea vulgaris) stock in the German exclusive economic zone (EEZ). This survey has been conducted annually during the spawning season of sole at the coasts of Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony since 1976. The resulting survey index gives insight into the stock situation of North Sea sole in the German EEZ. Despite the loss of 1.5 fishing days (due to unfavorable weather conditions), all intended sole stations were covered. Additionally, 13 plankton stations were sampled. After finishing the sole and plankton stations, the Danish EEZ was entered and fishing for whiting (Merlangius merlangus) was conducted for the last two remaining fishing days. The resulting survey index indicates that the part of sole stock spawning in the German EEZ remains stable on a low level. However, conclusions for the North Sea sole stock can only be drawn when all information from the entire stock are available to the appropriate assessment group (WGNSSK) of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES). The fishing for whiting was not successful, in total only three whiting were caught in all hauls conducted.
