Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Preamble: The oceanographic and marine geoscience excursion HE-376 is a key element of the undergraduate education at the Jacobs University Bremen and the graduate education at AWI (ESSReS and POLMAR). This cruise provides the students with an excellent opportunity to gain some practical hands-on experience. The goal of the cruise is not to gather scientific data but to provide an introduction to seagoing expeditions (learn to deploy equipment used for chemical, biological and geophysical data acquisition). Except for the CTD and some of the geophysical profiles, no other data were measured. For instance, during deployment of the CTD/rosette, water samples were taken for nutrients, chlorophyll and carbonate chemistry parameters but no (onboard or post cruise) analyses took place. The CTD data of this cruise can be found under http://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.780268. The geophysical data are stored on the server at Jacobs university and are available upon request. The cruise events were recorded independently by the narrator and the navigation group. All times presented below are in UTC and are listed according to the observations of the narrator and due to this occasionally differ from the times in the navigation report. Alternatevely, a log of the cruise was kept by the ship captain the ship book. The narrative only covers the first leg of the cruise. April, 10th 2012 3:45: The students gathered on the gate of the university to get on the bus heading to Bremerhaven. 5:00: Students got to the Heincke cruise. They had a very short introduction to the rules of the boat and the facilities. The main facilities that were used by the students were the dry lab and the wet lab. 5:30: Students gathered together to have breakfast. 6:00: There was a safety drill performed. All the students where gathered on deck by a very loud alarm and the crew of the boat explained the students the safety measures in case of emergency. 6:20: All the Students gathered in the dry lab and they selected the tasks that they wanted to perform during the next two days.
