Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

This cruise was directly related to the joint project WIMO ("Scientific monitoring concepts for the German Bight") funded by Land Niedersachsen and the Volkswagen AG Foundation. The project addresses shortcomings in the evaluation of the North Sea environment, that are caused by insufficiencies of historical data, long-term data, trend analyses, as well as nonexistent joint analyses and non-comprehensive multidisciplinary data sets. The research cruise serves WIMO Project Area 1, Subproject 1.1: PA 1: Habitat exploration SP 1.1: Habitat mapping of the sea floor using hydroacoustic means Project Area 1 "Habitat exploration" focusses on mapping habitats and morphodynamics at the sea floor and in the Wadden Sea. A further focus is on the integration of innovative remote-sensing methods that are to be developed. In the frame of multiple measuring campaigns, a set of selected target areas in the German Bight were surveyed using most commonly used gear for acoustic sea-floor classification (here: RoxAnn, QTC, Sidescan sonars). The measured data will be compared with each other and with video footage and surface samples from the sea floor to arrive at a consistent and standardized statement on the acoustic properties of various habitat types.
