Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The HZG Institute for Coastal Research in co-operation with other members of the "German Marine Science Board" is constructing an integrated coastal observing network for the North Sea/German Bight that will be part of an international oceanographic observing system (COSYNA: Coastal Observing System for Northern and Arctic Seas). In addition to ongoing observations from automated systems, ship cruises are carried out with the following objectives: - To aquire additional detailed information about the vertical and horizontal distribution of physical and bio-geochemical parameters across the German EEZ within the order of a week - to test and implement new sensor technologies for subsequent pre-operational usage within COSYNA - transfer functions of optical and acoustical parameters into water constituent parameters based on water samples - validation of remote sensing data - validation and test of numerical models used foroperational purpose within COSYNA The observations are made along a ship track of four East-west and four North-South transects to catch the main along- and across-shore variation of the observed parameters. Data are taken continuously using an undulating towed-fish and a 600 kHz ADCP. Stations are taking at crossing points and edges of the transects and at MARNET positions for taking water samples in parallel with extended CTD profilers. In addition to the COSYNA activities the measurements are part of the EU project PROTOOL. In the second part of the cruise a new system for near-bed sediment dynamics was tested over two tides close to Heligoland.
