Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The 2012 Winter Crangon Survey (WCS) is part of a time series started in 1991 to monitor regional distribution and abundance of brown shrimp (Crangon crangon) in wintertime in the German Bight and adjacent areas along Danish and Dutch coasts. SOLEA cruise 651 was the second of two cruises in that programme in 2012. Depth of hauls ranged between 10 and 43 m and showed patchiness of the shrimp abundance with comparatively higher catches also in deeper areas. Side aspects of the cruise were catch efficiency trials using a wider cod end mesh of 24 mm compared to the standard net with nominal 20 mm mesh size in the cod end of some parallel hauls. Moreover, 13 plancton tows were done to detect Crangon larvae in the water column, and parallel trawls with a 2-m-beam trawl equipped with tickler chain and ground rope with chain were done for gear comparison. Besides shrimp all by-catch taxa were registered by species and weight as well as by numbers caught, partly sub sampling. The survey resulted in records of 37 fish species and 34 recorded invertebrate taxa in both surveys combined (SOLEA 650 and 651). 54 stations were sampled and CTD data were collected at each station. Together with SOLEA cruise 650, WCS resulted in 74 stations fished in 2012.
