Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Aim of the Project SO-214, NEMESYS, is the investigation of Methane transport processes in both, a local and a regional focus. As well facies of Cold vents and hydrate occurrences along an accretionary complex, the Hikurangi Margin east of the North Island, will be characterized. During two legs R/V SONNE will carry out intensive geophysical, geological, geochemical and biological investigations at known vent sites. Quantative and qualative description of the implication of natural released methane to turnover processes in / at the seafloor and in the water column is a major goal of the project. Very high resolution geo-acoustic data acquisition (3-D MCS, deep towed streamer and SideScan) will support the analysis of source depth, composition, bio-geochemical and microbial processes of the fluids. Members of GNS are personally involved in the project development and are listed as onboard cruise participation.
