Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
Physical, chemical, biological research and fishery oceanography. This multidisciplinary cruise was conducted within the framework of different projects, i) AQUASHIFT, ii) CAVIAR, iii) EPOCA, and iv) DFG-Mnemiopsis. The different research activities were focussed on the Bornholm Basin, the Gdansk Deep and the Gotland Basin. Additionally CTD stations in the Arkona Basin and CTD and Bongo stations in the Slupsk Furrow were conducted. The survey considered investigations on different plankton distributions, incl. phyto-, zoo- and ichthyoplankton as well as on pelagic clupeids and gadoid fish. The physical measurements of this cruise were designed to investigate the quasi-synoptic three-dimensional distribution of temperature, salinity and oxygen. Within the framework of the aforementioned projects the data will be utilized to initialize a three-dimensional baroclinic eddy-resolving circulation model of the Baltic Sea. Other major goals were the description of abundance, biomass, production and nutritional condition of phyto-, zoo- and ichthyoplankton. Further emphasis was given on the meso- to small-scale horizontal distribution of their main predator fish species herring and sprat. Additionally, horizontal and vertical distribution, stock structure, gonadal maturation, egg production, age structure, genetics and survival of sprat and cod was investigated.
