Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
Polarstern departed from Bremerhaven on 10. June 2010 to perform research in the Greenland Sea. This region attains increased scientific attention during the recent decades due to its highly sensitive reaction to climatic changes. The main focus of the cruise leg was related to the change of physical properties of the ocean (with special emphasis on long term variations) and on its interaction with the biosphere. The Alfred-Wegener-Institute already owns a long research history in the Greenland Sea which allows to quantify important processes like meridional heat fluxes, winter convection depths, and heat and salt storage in the ocean. The length of the time series, which started in 1994, allows to determine variabilities and trends of the related physical parameters.
