Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The MenezMAR cruise of Meteor M82/3 focussed on the geology, chemistry, and biology of the Menez Gwen hydrothermal vent field at 37?N on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR). Menez Gwen was chosen as a key study site for interdisciplinary studies within the MARUM Cluster of Excellence research on hydrothermal vents (Research Area Geo-Biosphere Interactions). The research cruise was centered around four goals: 1) Investigating the cause for the unusually high methane concentrations in the vent fluids, 2) Clarifying how the chemical and biological composition of diffuse fluids is influenced by conductive heating of seawater and cooling of vent fluids, 3) Determining the dominant geofuels in the subsurface, surface, and suprasurface, and investigating how these influence the composition and distribution of the microbial biota, and 4) Investigating the temporal development of the very young Menez Gwen vent system. The ROV MARUM-Quest was used for closely integrated geochemical and biological sampling of the Menez Gwen vent site, and new site was discovered 5 km to the south of Menez Gwen.
