Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Objectives of the cruise HE339 was a chimney structure 40 km north of Borkum, a chimney structure 20 km north of the Helgoland and the site of the FINO3 platform 80 west of Sylt in the North Sea. Chimney structures in seismic data can be an indication for fluid pathways within sediments. Originally the chimney structures were found in seismic profile data collected for the oil industry. While the deeper structure of the chimneys is well imaged the shallower details and it lateral extend was not revealed. Aim of the cruise HE339 was to investigate the shallow structure and its lateral extend of both chimneys by high resolution reflection seismic imaging. At the chimney structure north of Borkum also a wide angle refraction seismic profiles was acquired to determine the seismic velocity and its anisotropy. The FINO3 platform is a research platform to investigate the impact of an offshore construction on the environment. Current, wave action and wind pressure could change the sediment structure in the immediate vicinity of offshore structures. The development over time and the spatial expansion of such effects is investigated and quantified using repeating seismic measurements around the platform.
