Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
The region off NW Africa is one of the most productive regions on Earth as result of the presence of coastal upwelling and the year round terrestrial dust input that fertilize the ocean by nutrient and trace elements. The relationship between upper ocean fertilization, marine bioproduction, transport and burial s far from being completely understood. To obtain insight into this the organic matter (OM) and carbon production and flux in the upper waters as well as the modification of its chemical, organic geochemical, isotopic and elemental character during transport though the water column and at the sediment/water interface (SWI) is studied. For this waters, suspended matter and sediments have been collected in upper waters, throughout the water column notably in nepheloid layers and SWI by a CTD/Rosette, in-situ pumps, bottom water sampler and Multicore systems..
