Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The main research topics of this cruise were the sources, sinks, and biogeochemical cycles of trace elements and their isotopes (TEIs) in the tropical Atlantic. The cruise was carried out under the umbrella of the international GEOTRACES programme. Trace metals play an important role in marine biogeochemistry in that they can act as micronutrients that limit bioproductivity in the surface ocean of particular areas. TEIs are also important geochemical tracers for water mass mixing and weathering inputs into the ocean, which are widely applied as tracers of past ocean variability. The reliable application of TEIs requires a global data set of their oceanic distributions, which is currently still missing. The goal of the GEOTRACES programme is to close this gap of knowledge. The ship left Las Palmas on February 4, 2010 and collected data from a series of stations aligned along a southwesterly and southern cruise track cruise track along 20?W until it reached the equator. Then a southwesterly cruise track followed into the Brasil Basin until 11?30'S, 28?30'W. After this station the track turned northwest and followed the coastline of South America outside the local EEZs At all stations CTD casts (including water sampling with a trace metal clean rosette sampler using GO-FLOs system and a normal Niskin Rosette) were carried out. We profiled the water column with in-situ pumps to collect particulate data supporting the dissolved TEI data. The ship reached Port of Spain on March 8, 2010.
