Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Objectives: 1) Reconstruction of glacial cyclicity from begin of Antarctic glaciation to retreat from large glacial maxium, in particular that of the Amundsen Sea Embayment and Pine Island Bay; 2) Reconstruction of the tectonic and sedimentary evolution of the Amundsen Sea Embayment and the West Antarctic continental margin; 3) Investigation of transport and properties of water masses in Amundsen Sea Embayment; 4) Methane production in surface waters and biodiversity of phytoplankton; 5) Investigation of crustal vertical and horizontal motion and ice-shelf dynamics; 6) Studies of abundance and distribution of marine mammals and birds; Narrative: 1) Geophysical surveying (seismics, magnetics, gravity) in Ross Sea, Amundsen Sea and SE Pacific; 2) Bathymetric surveying in Amundsen Sea with particular focus on Wrigley Gulf coast and Pine Island Bay; 3) Sedimentological sampling in Amundsen Sea and Pine Island Bay; 4) Oceanographic measurements and water sampling in Wrigley Gulf and Amundsen Sea Embayment; 5) Geological sampling on land sites of Marie Byrd Land, Hudson Mts. and Thurston Island; 6) Geodetic GPS measurements on land and ice-shelf sites in Pine Island Bay area and on Hobbs Coast; 7) Dredging of volcanic rocks and corals from Marie Byrd Seamounts;
