Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The SONNE cruise SO201 Leg1b (http://kalmar.ifm-geomar.de/?Marine_expeditions: SO201_Leg_1b) is one of three marine expeditions carried out in the frame of the German-Russian project KALMAR that is funded by German ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The expedition aimed of sampling volcanic rocks at seamounts, submarine ridges and fracture zones in the Northwest Pacific and the Bering Sea (e.g. Emperor Seamount Chain, Bowers Ridge, Aleutian Arc). Reconstructing the age, source and development of these structures will contribute to the main objective of KALMAR, to better understand the Geosystem Kurile-Kamtchatka-Aleuten-Arc. Complementing 3.406 nm bathymetric and sediment-echosounding profiling, a total of 45 dredges and one TV grab were carried out. Of these deployments, 38 recovered magmatic rock, 13 volcaniclastics, 8 sedimentary rock, and 15 Mn-Fe oxides (without dropstones).
