Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The investigations are focused on areas where the vertical stratification intersects with the sloping bottom topography. In the presence of cross-slope currents, these are the necessary preconditions for the occurrence of convectively unstable BBLs. In the Baltic Sea, pronounced vertical stratification is known to occur in the vicinity of the halocline, usually located at a depth of 20-40 m in the Arkona Basin and 50-70 m in the Bornholm Basin, as well as in the thermocline (depth 10-20 m) during the warm season. These values therefore set the area adjacent to the sediment, where convective bottom boundary layer mixing is most likely to occur. Different regions in the western Baltic Sea, where these conditions are met, were identified according to our preliminary work. It is evident that the definite choice of the study area depends on the meteorological conditions encountered (upwelling favorable or not), and the actual stratification patterns observed in the basins.
