Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

The main aim of the cruise was to study whether the bloom of cyanobacteria in the Baltic Proper is triggered and maintained by coastal upwelling of phosphate containing water from the layer of intermediate winter water. This water is located in the summer season in the depth range from about 30 m to 60 m depth and enters the surface layer in a narrow coastal belt of a few kilometer width when the wind is blowing along the coast with the coast to the right. A multi-disciplinary approach was used to study the cyanobacteria bloom. The ship was positioned in the coastal upwelling zone east of Gotland and in the water body of intensive cyanobacteria concentrations according to satellite pictures in the Gotland Basin. Physical, chemical, and biological measurements were performed along tracks from the coastal area where the actual upwelling took place to the downweling area at Latvian coast. Continuous measurements of stratification, currents, and chlorophyll-a were performed by a Scanfish along the track. At selected positions along the track water samples were taken in the surface and intermediate layers for the analysis of nitrate, phosphate and abundances of different species of cyanobacteria.
