Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Increasing atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2) change the marine chemistry because the CO2 dissolves in the ocean and the pH value decreases. Effects on the marine life and the major elemental cycles of C, N, and P have not yet been identified in detail. Within this project CO2 enrichment is studied in six freely drifting mesocosm which consits of a 20m bag of app. 60m? volume. They were deployed in the central Baltic Sea, Borhnholm Sea where they were enriched with increasing pCO2 levels from present day concentrations to 6 times this amount. Samples from the drifting mesocosms were taken with water bottles from a zodiak several times a day. CTD profiles were taken daily in all six mescosms. Primary productivity, bacteria productivity, nutrients and inorganic carbon, species composition, turnover, and concentrations of some volatile organic compounds were documented. RV Heincke co-operated closely with the RV Alkor from the Institute of Marine Research in Kiel. Both vessels served as swimming laboratories. Sampling with a zodiak had to be interrupted due to strong winds on several days.
