Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:

Physical, biological resarch and fishery oceanography This multidisciplinary cruise was conducted within the framework of different projects, i) CODYSSEY " Cod spatial dynamics and vertical movements in European waters and implications for fishery management", and ii) GLOBEC Germany "Trophic interaction between zooplankton and fish under the influence of physical processes" The different research activities were first focussed on a hydrographic survey in the Western Baltic Sea and the Arkona Basin. Additionally in the Bornholm Basinm the Stolpe Trench and in the Gdansk Basin the survey also considered investigations on horizontal distribution of zoo- and ichthyplankton as well as on pelagic clipeid and gadoid fish. The physical measurements of this cruise were designed to investigate the quasi-synoptic three-dimensional distribution of temperature, salinity and oxygen. According to the work programme of CODYSSEY, the framework of this project the data will also be utilized to initialize the three-deminsional baroclink eddy-resolving circulation model of the Baltic Sea. Other major goals concerning the GLOBEC project were the description of abundance and biomass of zoo-ichthyoplankton. Further emphasis was given on the meso- to small-scale horizontal distribution of their main predator fish species herring and spraz. Stock structure, gonadal maturation, egg production and survival of sprat and cod was investigated.
