Ziel der Reise / Objectives of Cruise:
Physical, biological resarch and fishery oceanography This multidisciplinary cruise was conducted within the framework of different projects, i) CODYSSEY "Cod spatial dynamics and vertical movements in European waters and implications for fishery management", and ii) GLOBEC Germany "Trophic intreaction between zooplankton and fish under the influence of physical processes" The different research activities were first focussed on a hydrographic survey in the Western Baltic (Belt Sea) and the Arkona Basin. Additionally in the Bornholm Basin, the Stolpe Trench and in the Gdansk Basin the survey also considered investigations on horizontal distribution of zoo- and ichthyplankton aswell as on pelagic clupeid and gadold fish. The physical measurements of this cruise were designed to investigate the quasi-synoptic three-dimensional dictribution of temperature, salinity and oxygen. According to the work programme of CODYSSEY, the hydrographic data will be utilized to serve as a geolocation database for recovered tagged Baltic cod.. Within the framework of this project the data will also be utilized toinitialize the three-dimensional baroclinc eddy-resolving circulation model of the Baltic Sea. Other major goals concerning the GLOBEC project were the description of abundance and biomass of zoo- and ichthyoplankton.
